Event Description:
The event was a guest lecture on global legal education and career development, conducted by a representative from Temple University. The session commenced with a welcome address by Asst. Prof. Ashwin Menon, who formally introduced the guest speaker, John, and noted that this marked his second visit to India, following an earlier visit in 2023.
During the lecture, Mr. John spoke extensively about career building in the modern professional world. He referred to a well-known idea proposed by a computer science professor that “passion is a myth”, explaining that a meaningful and sustainable career is instead built on service to others, creating impact, and achieving autonomy. He encouraged students to focus on developing long-term career capital rather than chasing short-term interests.
Mr. John also shared insights into the future of the legal market, highlighting the growing investments by U.S. companies in Bengaluru and other major Indian cities. He emphasized that global law firms increasingly seek lawyers who can understand and adapt to the legal reasoning, drafting styles, and professional culture of both the Indian legal system (influenced by UK traditions) and the U.S. legal system.
The lecture further covered the LLM program at Temple University, presenting it as a valuable pathway for Indian law students to gain exposure to the U.S. legal system, build international networks, and strengthen their global career prospects.
The session concluded with the circulation of a signing sheet, followed by a formal vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Ashwin Menon, marking the successful conclusion of an informative and professionally enriching event.
