Summary:
On 19th September 2024, NMIMS had the privilege of hosting an insightful masterclass titled "How to Negotiate (Almost) Anything", led by Professor Peter Gahan, Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning) in Management & Marketing from the University of Melbourne, Australia. This interactive session engaged students from diverse programs, including Family Business Management, Engineering, and MBA, and provided them with foundational skills essential to effective negotiation.
The masterclass began with Professor Gahan outlining core principles of best-practice negotiation, emphasizing strategies that foster mutual agreement, understanding, and value creation. He highlighted that while these principles might appear simple, applying them in high-stakes or live negotiations can be challenging and often requires keen situational awareness and adaptability.
Students then participated in a live negotiation exercise designed to test their ability to implement these strategies in a controlled, real-world scenario. This hands-on activity provided them with a practical understanding of negotiation dynamics, sharpening their ability to handle complex situations with confidence.
Following the exercise, participants engaged in a group discussion, where they shared their experiences, reflected on the challenges encountered, and analysed various approaches to effective negotiation. This reflective segment offered valuable insights into the nuances of negotiation and the importance of preparation, adaptability, and communication.
