About the University

The National University of Singapore (NUS) celebrates its 120th anniversary this year, still relatively young compared to some of the other most-recognised universities in the world. What began as a small medical school founded by a group of businessmen to serve the needs of the local community in 1905 has grown into not just Singapore’s flagship university but also one of the most prestigious and well-regarded names in academia worldwide.

In 120 years, it has gone from 23 students from a small community looking to be trained in medicine to 40,000+ students from more than 100 nationalities studying a wide range of subjects — 22 of which are among the global top 10 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. What all those numbers add up to (according to the QS World University Rankings 2026) is a university that is #1 in Asia and #8 in the world.

The University prides itself on its links and partnerships with industry, which translate into key advantages for NUS and its students and graduates. Being on the cutting edge is another mainstay of education at the University, which is home to the Centre for Quantum Technologies and the NUS Artificial Intelligence Institute. The University is constantly evolving to keep pace with developments not just in Singapore and the region, but also worldwide.
