Founded in 1821, George Washington University is the largest research university in Washington, D.C. In 2023, GW was invited to join the Association of American Universities, making it the only member of the research university organization in Washington, D.C.The university offers degree programs in seventy-one disciplines, enrolling around 11,500 undergraduate and 15,000 graduate students. These students come from over 140 countries and will become part of GW’s current 320,000 alumni worldwide.

Several other notable individuals have served as trustees, including two presidents, John Quincy Adams and Ulysses S. Grant, and Alexander Graham Bell. Notable alumni, faculty, and affiliates include 16 foreign heads of state or government, 28 United States senators, 27 United States governors, 18 U.S. cabinet members, and five Nobel laureates.
Washington, D.C., has over 175 embassies, ambassador's residences, and international cultural centers. The city is home to one of the world's largest diplomatic communities. In 2024, 20 companies with headquarters in the D.C. area were on the Fortune 500 list, including Amazon, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, The Boeing Co., and Lockheed Martin.
